James Blunt

James Blunt - Back to BedlamWhile I was on holiday, my sister kept mentioning the James Blunt song “You’re Beautiful”.  I’d heard it on the radio and, despite it being played to death, quite liked it.  I don’t buy many CD’s, but the holiday mood got to me and I decided to buy this one.

Definitely no regrets!  Wonderful raw lyrics and some nice (albeit subtle) guitar work.  Highly recommended.

From the track “High”:

“Beautiful dawn – lights up the shore for me.
There is nothing else in the world,
I’d rather wake up and see.

Beautiful dawn – melt with the stars again.
Do you remember the day when my journey began?
Will you remember the end?

Beautiful dawn – You’re just blowing my mind again.
Thought I was born to endless night, until you shine.

Will you be my shoulder when I’m grey and older?
Promise me tomorrow starts with you.”

There’s nothing like getting up early and watching the sun come up to know you’re alive!

Time to Get a Life

Aussie SunAfter a hard end to the year workwise followed by a very pleasant holiday in the Aussie sun, I’ve come back to look at this blog and realised just how entrenched I was with my work.  What a narrow focus!  Not good!  Time to get a life.

So the focus of the blog will change.  I’ll still post some entries about software development, but I’d like to include a lot more.

I must say, I found Photo Steve and his friends very inspiring in this regard.

For a start, I’ve updated the About page.  More to come.

Professional VB 2005

I’ve just bought this book and read the first couple of chapters.

Professional VB 2005
Bill Evjen et al.
ISBN 0-7645-7536-8

Looks good so far.

Hmmm… not sure how I feel about variable types that are implemented as an object.  I like a bit of raw bit manipulation at the OS level myself.  Maybe it’s still possible, I’ll keep an open mind.  Unsigned integers!  Lovely.

The VB6 Dilemma: Getting It Off My Chest

I used to play guitar professionally, and I still play for my own enjoyment today.  I’ve got a variety of instruments, amplifiers, effects etc.

One of my favorite pieces of equipment is a 1970 50 watt Marshall valve amp, it really rips!  Despite being built in the 1970’s, I can still get parts for it, I can still get repairs done, in fact, I can still buy a very similar amp new today!

But it doesn’t always suit the job at hand, so I also have a Roland Jazz Chorus solid state amp, still not a late model, but much more contemporary than the Marshall and better suited to today’s music.

Enough with the analogies, I’m sure you’re starting to see the point I’m making here.

Hello world!

I’ve been thinking about starting a blog lately… I’ve also been thinking that it’s time for me to learn Microsoft’s .NET.  I’ve been a VB programmer since version 3, but I haven’t taken the plunge to .NET and now, with the release of the 2005 version, I guess it’s a good time to start.

I’m sure this blog will get used for other things, but I’ve decided to make it a diary of my experience shifiting from classic VB to VB.NET.

Let the “fun” begin…
